Laundry and other machines in movies and TV
« on: May 22, 2016, 01:59:40 am »
I like reading machine stories here at the Plaza, a close second is finding a good scene in a movie or television show. I would like to hear about yours. Here are a few of mine.

Being laundered is a popular topic here, so first up is a scene from Moonlighting, an 80’s detective show starring Bruce Willis. The secretary Agnes DiPesto, played by Alice Beasley, gets trapped in an automatic laundry.

Full episode, scene starts at 31:00

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but the "Special Delivery" episode of Rugrats is what first made me realize I was into this stuff.

Tons of conveyor belts, mechanical arms, scanning lasers, even some real peril at the end.

Thanks Superdude103194, great clip. The AH-HA moment is always memorable. Hard to pin mine down, in my day Saturday mornings were filled with the great Republic Serials from the 30’s and 40’s along with cartoons like Scooby-Doo, Underdog, and Rocky and Bullwinkle.

We were inundated with images like your Rugrats clip, but it was probably the Republic Serials, live action shorts originally shown in movie theaters before the feature film and always ending with a cliffhanger. Most often it was the hero, or his love interest, on a conveyor slowly moving toward some horrible fate. They would be rescued at the beginning of the next installment, capture the villain, and after a quick embrace start a new adventure.

the "Special Delivery" episode of Rugrats was also what made me realize I had a thing for machines.

There was another cartoon called Angry Beavers that had an episode called "Box Top Beavers" where the characters ended up sending themselves to a cereal factory to try and get a prize. One of them ends up in the machinery: https://youtu.be/9_LSNOgTHzk?t=7m57s (couldn't find a better clip that wasn't on a suspicious site)

I've sort of always liked the cartoony side of machinery, I think it was probably because cartoons were my first time ever really seeing it :p

Thanks Blarg, I like that. Cartoons were great for their ability to show things not possible with live action. Here’s a couple of oldies.

From 1967. Tom and Jerry in Cannery Rodents

In this short from 1937, Donald Duck gets caught in various machines in the Modern Inventions museum. It’s interesting to see how the future is depicted during the dark days of the depression.

that Donald duck Has a few inventions I quite like

the automated wrapping machine is great. I could see that as part of a longer process where someone is wrapped up at the very end of a long line of machinery

of course as someone who quite enjoys diapers the automated nursery machine is something I like the idea of too, though I prefer conveyor belts and such over robots :p

The Toxic Avenger, quite possibly the worst horror film ever made. If you’re confused, the hero and villain are the same person.
