I have actually experimented with the self bondage described in the story: having weights on a long pole clipped to the nipples, then trying to turn around to unscrew a long bolt with the legs held apart by a spreader bar.  It is NOT easy!

If you ever get a chance to ride the Amtrak California Zephyr I highly recommend it. The countryside it passes through is just beautiful!
