Authors need encouragement
« on: July 23, 2016, 12:13:34 am »
I am fairly new to the forum but an avid reader of Grometsplaza.net for YEARS!!!!
I have in the past replied by email that was forwarded to the author but new to responding on the forum.  Hopefully some stories that have a part one or two but never really finish will not happen if more of us let the authors know we really like the stories.  I have to put it out there that my personal favorite is Charlotte Graham OMG wow excellent writing skills.
Anyway authors please keep it up someday I too may try my hand at it just worried about getting negativity myself.
Write on and let em know you like their stuff..  play safe and play harder

Hi Pilloryslave,

Thank you for your post, all authors like to get positive feedback. Posting feedback on the public forum may encourage others to read the story. Unfinished stories are a pet peeve of mine, but there are reasons other than lack of reader response. Some authors post to multiple story sites or run their own websites.

If you want to write a story, you should do it. Don’t worry about feedback, just write a story you’re passionate about, a story you would want to read. If someone feels the same way about your story they will let you know. Just remember writing is a craft that improves with practice and every new story you write will be the best work you’ve ever done.

I'd have to say I agree with Fordman here.  Not surprising, since we seem to agree on many things when it comes to writing.  Positive comments about a story are a very good incentive to a writer to contribute another work.  I love it when someone comments on one of my stories, and I make it a point to at least try to answer any comment made.  I've missed a few over the years, but I hope only a few.

As to the second point, I'll have to agree there as well.  If you write for the feedback, you're writing for the wrong reason.  Providing stories that readers can enjoy is important, no doubt about that.  Just remember, the first and last person you have to please with your stories is you.  Write what you love, and love what you write.  Everything else will follow.

The more I learn, the more I know.
The more I know, the less I understand.
The less I understand, the more I look.

Many wise words from both Lobo and Fordman.

It is true that sometimes authors receive negative feedback. This ranges from the constructive to the hurtful.....  But there is not an author out there that does not have critics as well as fans. Naturally when you get negative feedback it is disheartening. However, I have to applaud the vast majority of readers here, in that those with negative comments do make an effort not to hurt authors and often prefer not to comment, than leave something nasty. (Phew !)

But you cannot please all the people all the time, and the fan mail has been very nice.

Some notable authors no longer write due to negative feedback, that is true. But readers do appreciate that it is not in their own interest to lose authors this way, because if everyone left, there would be no new stuff to enjoy.

Lobo and many others gave me very helpful advice when I was starting out - write what pleases you. If others like it too, then that is a great bonus. But if you don't write what you like, how do you expect others to like it ?  It has to have your own passion first.

Hope that helps.

Daffy

Congrats on submitting a story.  Just remember, the when you enter the writers' room, the sane people go to the left.  And they both like it that way.  The rest of us go where we will.
