Safe and Sane... Fireworks!
« on: June 24, 2022, 09:22:10 pm »
How does that meme go? I was today years old when I learned there's a classification of fireworks called:

Safe and Sane.

My fireworks may not explode but I feel like my brain just did :)

I understand there's some research into "no fault" dynamite as well...

I'm old enough to remember when "safe and sane" started.  It's been around for a number of years.  As a kid the term was synonymous with "wimpy".  Parents might like it but I thought they were boring and a waste of money.  Give me the old reliable Black Cat firecrackers any day.

As it happens I was once associated with a certain group in Nevada who would set up a very special fireworks night once a year, way out in the Mojave Desert.  "Real" fireworks consisted of big bangs like five gallon jugs of gasoline (makes a roman candle look pathetic), liquid fueled rockets (bottle rocket on steroids) and the ultimate firecracker, a stick of dynamite (it leaves an impressive hole in the ground).  Dangerous?  No, this group were explosives and commercial fireworks specialists.  Safer than "safe and sane", but as to the sane part?  Not in the least.
Tell me, O muse, of that ingenious hero who travelled far and wide
