The story did convey the feel of a Siberian city, from the mysterious dacha in the taiga to a hint of the ever-present FSB.  There is a hint of the brute in how the men are characterized, but that only adds to the ambiance of the background common to a Russian novel.  All that's missing are the tame bear and empty vodka bottles scattered all over the floor...

I have a small interest in reading about nearby Buryatia, so the mention of the one-time closed city of Tomsk attracted my attention.  It's a part of the world with little exposure in the U.S.

Overall, the story is well-written.  The one jarring note was the use of feet instead of centimeters, but I grant the use of poetic license to satisfy American readers.  I hope to see more from a promising new author.
