I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this book here before.
Erika Moak's story was first published on the web in the late 2000s, and caused a bit of a splash at the time - remember "banes" - that's her creation. It is now available in book form.
This is a story about a reporter who decides to investigate a new alternate form of incarceration, banishment, by going through the process herself. This involves being poured into a latex-like suit and oval helmet that cuts off the prisoner from society (the "banes" - those banished).
This story is what convinced me to write. It covers themes of love, identity; it's a critique of how we treat criminals and the homeless, of the dangers of corporate answers to government problems. All that *and* it's a very kinky story too, covering latex, total enclosure, mind control... a must read for any fan of heavy rubber or droning.
