Very interesting short story here, with a little foray into shapeshifter sex. However, the ship I think you should have shortened to the Tyson, as it is customary for ships named after people to use the last name, i.e. the air craft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower CVN-69 would be called simply the Eisenhower.
